Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is due to their familiar spiral shape shell reminiscent of what we know as a snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all. They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, that had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern-day nautilus, and although they resembled a nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living Coleoids, i.e. octopus, squid, and cuttlefish.

These stunningly beautiful Ammonites have been sliced in half and polished to expose the amazingly colourful inner chambers of the fossil.

Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Description

This listing showcases a beautiful pair of genuine Cretaceous Ammonite fossils, discovered in the fossil-rich deposits of Madagascar and carefully sliced and polished to reveal the breathtaking internal chamber structure of these ancient marine creatures.

Ammonites are among the most iconic and easily recognised fossils, known for their tightly coiled spiral shells that resemble the shape of a modern snail—but these fascinating creatures are in fact more closely related to modern squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish (coleoids). They thrived in the world’s oceans from about 240 to 65 million years ago, with the Cretaceous Period marking their final flourishing before their extinction alongside the dinosaurs.

The internal chambers seen in these sliced ammonite halves once served as buoyancy aids, allowing the animal to regulate its position in the water column. The polished interior often reveals a kaleidoscope of natural mineralisation, with calcite, aragonite, and other minerals having slowly replaced the original organic materials over millions of years.

These paired specimens are ideal for display, educational use, or as a captivating collector’s item. Their natural symmetry and intricate inner details make them perfect gifts for fossil lovers, educators, or anyone interested in the natural history of life on Earth.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
