Modern horses have come a long way since their prehistoric ancestors roamed the grasslands and prairies of Cenozoic North America. The evolution of the horse, a mammal of the family Equidae, occurred over a geologic time scale of 50 million years, transforming the small, dog-sized, forest-dwelling Eohippus into the modern horse.

Description

For sale is a genuine fossilised tooth from the genus Equus, the group that includes all modern horses, donkeys, and zebras. This particular specimen was discovered in the Santafe River, Florida, USA, a well-known fossil-rich site celebrated for yielding Ice Age megafauna remains.

Dating to the Pleistocene Epoch (approximately 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago), this tooth is a direct remnant of the great herds of prehistoric horses that once roamed the North American continent. Horses originated in North America and later spread to other parts of the world via land bridges. Fossils like these represent a vital chapter in the evolutionary story of equines and the ecological networks of the Ice Age.

The Pleistocene was characterised by glacial cycles and the rise of large mammals (megafauna), including mammoths, mastodons, saber-toothed cats, and early horses. Equus species were widespread grazers, and their teeth were adapted for a tough, grassy diet. The durability of these teeth has made them some of the most commonly preserved horse fossils.

This fossil tooth has been professionally cleaned and prepped, revealing its excellent anatomical detail – from the enamel ridges to the root structure. It is a superb display piece or educational item that offers a direct connection to Ice Age fauna.

Pleistocene Information

The Pleistocene Epoch (2.58 million – 11,700 years ago) was a time of repeated ice ages, shaping Earth's landscapes and ecosystems. Massive glaciers advanced and retreated, covering large parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. This period saw the rise of megafauna, including woolly mammoths, saber-toothed cats, giant ground sloths, and cave bears. Early humans (Homo erectus, Neanderthals, and Homo sapiens) spread across the world, developing tools, art, and early societies. Many species adapted to harsh, cold climates, but as the Ice Age ended, global warming and human hunting contributed to the extinction of many large mammals. The Pleistocene transitions into the Holocene, the current epoch, marking the beginning of human civilization.
