The Nautilus (from the Latin name ‘sailor’) is a pelagic marine mollusc of the cephalopod family. It comprises six living species in two genera, the type of which is the genus Nautilus. Though it more specifically refers to species Nautilus pompilius, the name chambered nautilus is also used for any of the Nautilidae. Having survived relatively unchanged for millions of years, nautiluses represent the only living members of the subclass nautiloidea, and are often considered ‘living fossils’.

Description

Cretaceous Nautilus Fossil

This genuine Cretaceous Nautilus fossil is associated with Madagascar and offers a distinctive piece of natural history for fossil collectors, geological displays and educational collections. Nautilus is a cephalopod mollusc, a group of marine animals that includes modern nautiluses, ammonites and belemnites. The identification places this specimen within the Cretaceous, a major period of Earth’s geological history known for its diverse marine life as well as its famous terrestrial reptiles.

Fossil Identification and Geological Interest

Nautilus fossils are especially appreciated for their chambered shell structure and connection to the long evolutionary history of cephalopods. In life, a nautilus shell was divided into internal chambers that helped the animal regulate buoyancy in the marine environment. Over geological time, shells and other hard parts could become preserved in sediment and later emerge as collectible fossils. The Cretaceous age gives this specimen strong appeal for anyone interested in marine palaeontology, ancient oceans and the development of shelled cephalopods.

Madagascar is well known for its rich and varied fossil record, making specimens associated with the island especially attractive to collectors of world fossils. This piece can be used as a conversation piece, a teaching aid or a display specimen alongside other fossils from different geological periods. Its Nautilus identification also makes it relevant to collections focused on molluscs, cephalopods, marine invertebrates and the history of life.

Collector Display and Educational Use

A Cretaceous Nautilus fossil can add geological character to a home office, study, classroom, museum-style cabinet or natural history display. It is suitable for collectors building a broad fossil assortment and for enthusiasts who enjoy specimens connected with ancient marine environments. The fossil may also be a thoughtful gift for students, amateur palaeontologists, geology enthusiasts and anyone fascinated by prehistoric life.

The specimen is supplied as the actual item shown in the listing photographs, allowing the buyer to assess its visible appearance before purchase. Full sizing is shown in the photographs. The photograph shows the actual specimen you will receive.

This fossil is a tangible example of the preserved geological record and a useful way to explore the relationship between palaeontology, marine biology and Earth history. Its Cretaceous Nautilus identification and Madagascar association give it a clear place within collections devoted to ancient marine organisms and globally sourced fossil material.
