Baltic Amber with Unidentified Inclusions – Genuine Eocene Fossil Resin – Ancient Prehistoric Insects

£25.20

This is 56-33.9 million year old Baltic amber which houses a Fly inclusion.

Amber Inclusions are unfortunate animals, insects, plants etc. which became entombed in tree resin (not tree sap) millions of years ago. With the inclusion engulfed, the resin slowly hardened through a natural polymerization of the original organic compounds. This hardened material is known as Copal, which preserves the inclusion perfectly. Through time the Copal becomes buried and, over a several million year process, slowly turns into what we know as Amber. Incredibly this process has allowed us to marvel at ancient specimens frozen in time, as if captured only yesterday.

GRADE ‘C’: Amber pieces contain good quality inclusions that will require the aid of a magnifying lens to be viewed in great detail.

We would always suggest using a magnifying aid to view your specimen to truly appreciate the inclusions stunning frozen detail. Inclusions can include such specimens as flies, gnats, midges, beetles, wasps, ants, spiders, seeds, plants & more!

Please note: Amber with inclusions are regarded as collectible specimens, making them highly sought after, with a varying level in price dependent on the size &/or type of inclusion entombed. Amber comes in all shapes & sizes, as do the inclusions present inside. Some of which can be small insects such as gnats, ants, midges etc. and to view them in great detail may require the aid of a hand lens. Amber which includes larger inclusions which are easily visible to the naked eye would be substantially more expensive in the open market & classed more as ‘museum pieces’.

Description

This listing features a fascinating specimen of Baltic Amber from the Eocene epoch (56–33.9 million years ago), containing unidentified inclusions. These prehistoric inclusions are perfectly preserved remnants of ancient life, providing a unique and direct window into the ecosystems of Earth’s deep past.

Amber forms when tree resin (not sap) exudes and captures small organisms and organic debris. Over millions of years, this resin hardens through natural polymerisation, forming Copal. As geological processes bury and compress the Copal, it eventually transforms into true Amber — a fossil resin capable of astonishing preservation.

The Baltic Sea region is world-renowned for its amber deposits, containing some of the highest quality inclusions discovered to date. The insects in this specimen are clearly visible and include forms resembling flies, gnats, midges, or other small arthropods. These inclusions would require a magnifying lens or loupe to fully appreciate the incredible detail.

Amber inclusions offer valuable scientific information, especially about the evolution of insects and the environment they lived in. They are also highly collectible and sought after due to their aesthetic beauty and rarity.

Miocene Information

The Miocene Epoch (23–5.3 million years ago) was a time of major climatic and ecological change, shaping many of today’s ecosystems. The climate was generally warmer and drier, but it gradually cooled as ice sheets expanded in Antarctica. This shift led to the spread of grasslands and savannas, replacing many ancient forests and driving the evolution of grazing mammals like early horses, antelope, and elephants. Ape species diversified, with some moving toward more ground-dwelling lifestyles, setting the stage for early hominins. Marine life thrived, with giant sharks like Megalodon ruling the oceans. The Miocene laid the foundation for modern ecosystems, with many plant and animal groups adapting to the drier, open landscapes that became dominant.
