Description
Offered here is a genuine and beautifully preserved Garantiana longidens fossil ammonite, collected from the Upper Bajocian Stage of the Middle Jurassic Period, originating from La Capillaire, France. This fine example is part of the renowned Alice Purnell Collection and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Garantiana longidens is a species of extinct ammonite, a group of marine molluscs that thrived in ancient seas. This particular genus is notable for its robust, strongly ribbed shell and pronounced tubercles. Its name reflects its characteristic long teeth-like projections (“longidens”), making it a fascinating piece for both display and study.
Ammonites like Garantiana were free-swimming predators or scavengers, closely related to modern squid, octopus, and cuttlefish. They lived in the seas that covered parts of Europe during the Jurassic Period, around 170 million years ago, when La Capillaire was part of a warm, shallow marine environment ideal for fossil preservation.
The Bajocian stage is particularly rich in ammonite diversity and is widely studied for biostratigraphy. Fossils from this formation offer valuable insight into Middle Jurassic marine ecosystems and evolutionary lineages.
This ammonite fossil has been carefully prepared to reveal its defining features, making it an excellent addition to any fossil collection, educational setting, or museum display.
