Specimen: Baltic Amber with Fly Inclusion

Age: Eocene

Location: Baltic Sea

Size (picture scale cube=1cm):  15 x 13 x 5mm

Grade: C

This is 56-33.9 million year old Baltic amber which houses an inclusion.

Amber inclusions are unfortunate animals, insects, plants etc. that became entombed in tree resin (not tree sap) millions of years ago. With the inclusion engulfed, the resin slowly hardened through a natural polymerization of the original organic compounds. This hardened material is known as Copal, which preserves the inclusion perfectly. Through time the Copal becomes buried in the ground and, over a several million year process, slowly turns into what we know as Amber. Incredibly this process has allowed us to marvel at ancient specimens frozen in time, as if captured only yesterday.

GRADE ‘C’: Amber pieces contain good quality inclusions that will require the aid of a magnifying lens to be viewed in great detail.

**We would always suggest using a magnifying aid to view your specimen to truly appreciate the inclusions stunning detail. Amber inclusions can include such specimens as fliesgnatsmidgesbeetleswaspsantsspiderscockroach’sseedsplants & more.

This listing features a 100% genuine Baltic Amber specimen from the Eocene Epoch, dating back approximately 56 to 33.9 million years ago. This natural fossilised tree resin contains a unidentified organic inclusion, likely to be an insect, plant fragment or similar bio-material—perfectly captured in translucent golden amber.

Amber is not tree sap, but the resin of ancient coniferous trees. As this sticky resin oozed from tree trunks millions of years ago, it sometimes entrapped tiny creatures or plant debris. The resin then underwent a long process of natural polymerisation, becoming copal, and eventually transforming under pressure and heat into true amber over millions of years. This process preserved the inclusion in exquisite detail—effectively freezing a moment from deep time.

The specimen originates from the Baltic Sea region, which is home to the most famous and scientifically important amber deposits in the world.

Grade C inclusions typically:

  • Are visible, but may be partially obscured or faint
  • Contain small, partial or fragmented organisms
  • Require a magnifying glass or loupe to properly appreciate their structure

Amber inclusions may consist of: flies, gnats, beetles, wasps, ants, spiders, plant fragments, seeds, and more—making each piece a potential window into a prehistoric ecosystem.

Item Details:

  • Specimen: Baltic Amber with Unidentified Inclusion
  • Age: Eocene Epoch (~56–33.9 million years ago)
  • Location: Baltic Sea Region

Miocene Information

The Miocene Epoch (23–5.3 million years ago) was a time of major climatic and ecological change, shaping many of today’s ecosystems. The climate was generally warmer and drier, but it gradually cooled as ice sheets expanded in Antarctica. This shift led to the spread of grasslands and savannas, replacing many ancient forests and driving the evolution of grazing mammals like early horses, antelope, and elephants. Ape species diversified, with some moving toward more ground-dwelling lifestyles, setting the stage for early hominins. Marine life thrived, with giant sharks like Megalodon ruling the oceans. The Miocene laid the foundation for modern ecosystems, with many plant and animal groups adapting to the drier, open landscapes that became dominant.
