Specimen: Baltic Amber with Fly Inclusion

Age: Eocene

Location: Baltic Sea

Size (picture scale cube=1cm):   17 x 13 x 10mm

Grade: C

This is 56-33.9 million year old Baltic amber which houses an inclusion.

Amber inclusions are unfortunate animals, insects, plants etc. which became entombed in tree resin (not tree sap) millions of years ago. With the inclusion engulfed, the resin slowly hardened through a natural polymerization of the original organic compounds. This hardened material is known as Copal, which preserves the inclusion perfectly. Through time the Copal becomes buried in the ground and, over a several million year process, slowly turns into what we know as Amber. Incredibly this process has allowed us to marvel at ancient specimens frozen in time, as if captured only yesterday.

GRADE ‘C’: Amber pieces contain inclusions that may be slightly obstructed or an incomplete specimen and may require the aid of a magnifying lens to be viewed in detail.

**We would always suggest using a magnifying aid to view your specimen to truly appreciate the inclusions stunning detail. Amber inclusions can include such specimens as fliesgnatsmidgesbeetleswaspsantsspiderscockroach’sseedsplants & more!

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

Description

This listing features a 100% genuine Baltic Amber specimen from the Eocene Epoch, dating back approximately 56 to 33.9 million years ago. This naturally fossilised tree resin contains a fly insect inclusions, possibly insect or plant matter, frozen in time by nature’s own preserving process.

Amber is not tree sap but hardened resin produced by ancient coniferous trees. As the resin flowed, it occasionally trapped unsuspecting organisms or plant debris. Through natural polymerisation and over millions of years, this resin fossilised into amber. The result? Exquisitely preserved inclusions that offer a fascinating look at prehistoric life.

This specimen originates from the Baltic Sea region, one of the richest sources of amber in the world. Baltic amber is particularly prized for its high quality and range of fossil inclusions, including flies, gnats, beetles, spiders, plant fragments, and more.

Grade C inclusions may:

  • Be partially obstructed or indistinct
  • Contain fragmented or partial organisms
  • Require a magnifying glass or microscope for proper viewing

While not as clear as higher grades, Grade C amber offers a budget-friendly opportunity to own authentic Eocene-era biological inclusions.

We strongly recommend using a magnifying aid to examine and appreciate the detail of this inclusion. Whether it’s a tiny insect or delicate plant structure, it’s a genuine piece of prehistoric life.

Item Details:

  • Specimen: Baltic Amber with Fly Insect Inclusions
  • Age: Eocene Epoch (~56–33.9 million years ago)
  • Location: Baltic Sea Region
  • Grade: C – Inclusion may be faint, fragmented, or obscured
  • Condition: Naturally fossilised resin with visible inclusion
  • Scale Reference: Scale cube = 1cm. See photo for full sizing
  • Certificate of Authenticity: Included with every purchase

A wonderful piece for collectors, educators, and natural history enthusiasts, offering a real glimpse into life from the ancient Eocene world.

Miocene Information

The Miocene Epoch (23–5.3 million years ago) was a time of major climatic and ecological change, shaping many of today’s ecosystems. The climate was generally warmer and drier, but it gradually cooled as ice sheets expanded in Antarctica. This shift led to the spread of grasslands and savannas, replacing many ancient forests and driving the evolution of grazing mammals like early horses, antelope, and elephants. Ape species diversified, with some moving toward more ground-dwelling lifestyles, setting the stage for early hominins. Marine life thrived, with giant sharks like Megalodon ruling the oceans. The Miocene laid the foundation for modern ecosystems, with many plant and animal groups adapting to the drier, open landscapes that became dominant.
