Specimen: Baltic Amber with Fly Inclusion

Age: Eocene

Location: Baltic Sea

Scale cube=1cm: Full sizing please see photo

Grade: C

This is 56-33.9 million year old Baltic amber which houses an inclusion.

Amber inclusions are unfortunate animals, insects, plants etc. that became entombed in tree resin (not tree sap) millions of years ago. With the inclusion engulfed, the resin slowly hardened through a natural polymerization of the original organic compounds. This hardened material is known as Copal, which preserves the inclusion perfectly. Through time the Copal becomes buried in the ground and, over a several million year process, slowly turns into what we know as Amber. Incredibly this process has allowed us to marvel at ancient specimens frozen in time, as if captured only yesterday!

GRADE ‘C’:Amber pieces contain good quality inclusions that will require the aid of a magnifying lens to be viewed in great detail.

**We would always suggest using a magnifying aid to view your specimen to truly appreciate the inclusions stunning detail. Amber inclusions can include such specimens as flies, gnats, midges, beetles, wasps, ants, spiders, cockroach’s, seeds, plants & more!

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions

Description

This listing features a 100% genuine Baltic Amber specimen from the Eocene Epoch, dating back approximately 56 to 33.9 million years ago. This fossilised tree resin contains a fly inclusion, remarkably preserved in natural golden amber.

Amber is formed from the fossilisation of tree resin (not sap) secreted by prehistoric trees. As the resin dripped and pooled, it occasionally trapped unsuspecting tiny animals or plant debris. Through a natural process of polymerisation, the resin hardened into copal, and over millions of years transformed under geological pressure into true amber. This exceptional preservation process gives us a unique glimpse into ancient ecosystems.

This specimen originates from the Baltic Sea region, one of the world’s richest and most scientifically significant amber-producing areas. The conditions in this region allowed for remarkable preservation of delicate creatures like flies, offering an incredible window into the insect life of the Eocene.

Grade C amber typically includes:

  • Well-preserved inclusions that may be small or partially obscured
  • Inclusions that require magnification for optimal viewing

We strongly recommend using a magnifying glass or loupe to appreciate the fine details of the gnat inclusion.

Amber inclusions may include a range of microfauna and flora such as:

  • Gnats
  • Flies
  • Midges
  • Beetles
  • Wasps
  • Spiders
  • Ants
  • Seeds and plant fragments

Eocene Information

The Eocene Period (56–33.9 million years ago) was a time of warm global temperatures and the rapid evolution of mammals following the extinction of the dinosaurs. The climate was hot and humid, with lush rainforests covering much of the planet, even near the poles. Mammals diversified into new ecological roles, with early primates, whales (like Basilosaurus), large herbivores, and carnivores emerging. Birds and reptiles also thrived, and the first grasses began spreading, setting the stage for later grassland ecosystems. By the late Eocene, the Earth’s climate cooled significantly, leading to the formation of the first Antarctic ice sheets and the eventual transition to the drier, cooler Oligocene Period.
