This is 56-33.9 million year old Baltic amber which houses an inclusion.

Amber inclusions are unfortunate animals, insects, plants etc. that became entombed in tree resin (not tree sap) millions of years ago. With the inclusion engulfed, the resin slowly hardened through a natural polymerization of the original organic compounds. This hardened material is known as Copal, which preserves the inclusion perfectly. Through time the Copal becomes buried in the ground and, over a several million year process, slowly turns into what we know as Amber. Incredibly this process has allowed us to marvel at ancient specimens frozen in time, as if captured only yesterday!

**We would always suggest using a magnifying aid to view your specimen to truly appreciate the inclusions stunning detail. Amber inclusions can include such specimens as fliesgnatsmidgesbeetleswaspsantsspiderscockroach’sseedsplants & more.

GRADE ‘C’: Amber pieces contain good quality inclusions that will require the aid of a magnifying lens to be viewed in great detail.

Description

This listing features a 100% genuine Baltic Amber specimen from the Eocene Epoch, dating back approximately 56 to 33.9 million years ago. This natural fossilised tree resin contains visible multiple inclusions, beautifully preserved in the translucent golden amber.

Amber forms from the fossilisation of tree resin (not sap) produced by ancient coniferous trees. Over millions of years, this resin entombed unfortunate small animals, insects, and plant fragments. The resin first hardens into copal through natural polymerisation, and then slowly transforms into amber under geological pressure and heat over millions of years. This process preserves organisms with astonishing clarity, creating what we now consider prehistoric time capsules.

The specimen comes from the Baltic Sea region, globally known for its extensive and rich amber deposits, which have yielded some of the best-preserved insect fossils in the world.

Grade C amber includes:

  • Clearly visible inclusions, though they may be partial, faint or obscured
  • Inclusions that often require a magnifying lens or loupe to be viewed in full detail

We highly recommend using a magnifying aid to view the intricate details of the trapped fly specimen and appreciate this tiny piece of natural history.

Amber inclusions can include a wide variety of organisms such as:

  • Flies
  • Gnats
  • Midges
  • Beetles
  • Wasps
  • Ants
  • Spiders
  • Cockroach nymphs
  • Seeds and plant fragments

Miocene Information

The Miocene Epoch (23–5.3 million years ago) was a time of major climatic and ecological change, shaping many of today’s ecosystems. The climate was generally warmer and drier, but it gradually cooled as ice sheets expanded in Antarctica. This shift led to the spread of grasslands and savannas, replacing many ancient forests and driving the evolution of grazing mammals like early horses, antelope, and elephants. Ape species diversified, with some moving toward more ground-dwelling lifestyles, setting the stage for early hominins. Marine life thrived, with giant sharks like Megalodon ruling the oceans. The Miocene laid the foundation for modern ecosystems, with many plant and animal groups adapting to the drier, open landscapes that became dominant.
