Description

This listing features a stunning and 100% genuine Cleoniceras ammonite fossil, dating back to the Cretaceous Period (~145 to 66 million years ago), and found in Madagascar. Carefully selected for its exceptional preservation and intricate natural structure, this fossil has been professionally sliced and polished to reveal its exquisite internal chambers.

Ammonites were ancient marine molluscs that thrived in oceans worldwide between 240 and 65 million years ago. Despite their snail-like appearance, ammonites were more closely related to modern octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish (collectively known as coleoids). Their spiral-shaped shells housed the soft-bodied animal and were used to regulate buoyancy as they swam using jet propulsion.

The genus Cleoniceras is particularly prized for its beautifully complex suture patterns and fossil structure. This specimen showcases mesmerising inner chamber patterns, mineralised over millions of years and often displaying captivating shades of browns, golds, and sometimes even subtle opalescent hues.

Each fossil is a unique piece of natural history, ideal for display, educational use, or as a thoughtful and timeless gift for fossil collectors, science enthusiasts, or fans of natural decor.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
