Crinoids are an ancient fossil group that first appeared in the seas of the Middle Cambrian, about 300 million years before dinosaurs.  The name comes from the Greek word krinon, ‘a lily’, and eidos, ‘form’. They live in both shallow water and in depths as great as 9,000 meters (30,000 ft). Those crinoids which in their adult form are attached to the sea bottom by a stalk are commonly called sea lilies.

Description

This listing features an authentic Crinoid Star Stem Fossil from the Lower Lias Formation of the Jurassic Period, discovered at Seatown, Dorset, UK — a location famous for yielding high-quality marine fossils from the early Jurassic seas.

Crinoids are an ancient group of marine echinoderms, related to sea urchins and starfish. First appearing in the Middle Cambrian over 500 million years ago, crinoids were especially abundant during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras. This particular specimen dates to the Early Jurassic, approximately 200 million years ago.

Often referred to as “sea lilies”, crinoids are named from the Greek words krinon (lily) and eidos (form), due to their flower-like appearance when alive. Unlike actual plants, crinoids were animals that lived anchored to the sea floor by a long stalk made up of star-shaped columnals — the feature visible in this fossil.

These columnals, or individual stem segments, are highly recognisable and make for unique and attractive fossil specimens. Crinoids were filter feeders, using feathery arms to catch plankton and other microscopic organisms from the water.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
