Description
This listing features a stunning and 100% genuine Trilobite Fossil from the Ordovician Period, expertly sourced from Morocco, a region globally recognised for its rich and diverse fossil beds.
Trilobites (meaning “three lobes”) are a group of extinct marine arthropods belonging to the class Trilobita. They are one of the earliest-known and most successful forms of complex life, with over 17,000 known species. Trilobites flourished in Earth’s oceans for more than 270 million years, first appearing in the Early Cambrian (~521 million years ago) and going extinct during the end-Permian mass extinction (~252 million years ago).
This fossil comes from the Ordovician Period (~485 to 443 million years ago), a time when marine life diversified significantly in what is known as the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE).
These fascinating creatures had segmented exoskeletons and a three-lobed body plan: a central axial lobe and two pleural lobes on either side, from which their name is derived. Trilobites were versatile and occupied a variety of ecological roles — from predators and scavengers to filter feeders. Some species even developed symbiotic relationships with bacteria!
