Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is mainly due to their familiar spiral shape shell, reminiscent of what we know as a modern day snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all. They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, who had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern nautilus, and although they resembled a modern day nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living coleoids i.e. octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

Description

This listing features a genuine and beautifully preserved Dactylioceras commune fossil, one of the most iconic ammonite species from the Jurassic Period (~201 to 174 million years ago). This specimen was collected from the fossil-rich strata of Yorkshire, United Kingdom, a world-famous site for Jurassic marine fossils.

Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods that roamed Earth’s ancient oceans for hundreds of millions of years. Their spiral-shaped shells are instantly recognisable and frequently compared to those of modern snails. However, ammonites are actually more closely related to today’s octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish, making them fascinating from both evolutionary and palaeontological standpoints.

Dactylioceras commune is a particularly well-known species, characterised by its ribbed spiral shell and often found in nodules or embedded in matrix. It serves as an important index fossil for dating Jurassic sediments. Fossils of this species help us understand the marine environments of the Jurassic period and the extraordinary biodiversity of that era.

This ammonite fossil offers a remarkable glimpse into ancient marine life and is ideal for both collectors and educators. Whether you’re expanding a fossil collection or looking for a scientifically valuable display piece, this authentic specimen is an excellent choice.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
