Authentic British Carboniferous Fossil Ferns
This listing is for a genuine Fossil Fern Plant specimen from the Coal Measures of the Carboniferous period, collected in Radstock, Somerset, UK. All of our fossils are 100% authentic and come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Geological Context:
The Coal Measures represent the coal-bearing deposits of the Upper Carboniferous System, dating to around 310–300 million years ago. In the UK, they are divided into the Upper, Middle, and Lower Coal Measures Formations, each preserving an extraordinary record of ancient ecosystems. These beds formed in vast swampy lowlands and delta environments that once stretched across much of Britain.
During this time, lush forests thrived in humid tropical conditions. Towering lycopod trees, giant horsetails, seed ferns, and early conifers dominated the landscape, while enormous insects and amphibians roamed. Over millions of years, the organic matter from these forests accumulated and transformed into the coal seams that would later power Britain’s industrial growth.
