In the United Kingdom, the Coal Measures Group consists of the Upper Coal Measures Formation, the Middle Coal Measures Formation and the Lower Coal Measures Formation. During this time, dense forests formed the rich ecosystem of the UK, with ferns, plants, fruits and giant insects that roamed.

Own a genuine piece of prehistoric history with this Carboniferous Fossil Fern from the renowned Coal Measures of the UK. This fossilized fern plant originates from Radstock, Somerset, a well-documented site for beautifully preserved fossils from the Upper Carboniferous period, dating back over 300 million years.

The Coal Measures refer to the coal-bearing strata of the Upper Carboniferous System, consisting of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Coal Measures Formations. During this time, Earth’s atmosphere had an exceptionally high oxygen content, allowing lush forests of ferns, cycads, horsetails, and towering lycopods to flourish. The fossilized remains of these plants contributed to the formation of modern-day coal deposits. This period was also home to some of the largest insects ever recorded, including giant dragonflies (Meganeura) with wingspans over 2 feet and millipedes (Arthropleura) reaching lengths of over 2 meters.

This exceptional specimen features well-preserved frond impressions, showcasing the intricate structure of ancient fern foliage. Each fossil is 100% authentic and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity for guaranteed provenance.
