Otodus obliquus Shark Tooth Fossil – Eocene – Genuine Moroccan Predator Tooth – Authentic with COA

£12.96

These Shark Teeth are from the Otodus species of shark that patrolled the seas of Morocco around the Eocene period ~ 56 to 33.9 million years ago. When a sharks’ teeth become worn the predator will ‘shed’ these teeth, and these will be replaced with new sharper, stronger teeth. However, unlike humans, Sharks are known for re-shedding hundreds of teeth on a regular basis, which makes them a fruitful find with fossil hunters.

Description

This listing features a genuine fossilised tooth from the extinct shark species Otodus obliquus, a powerful marine predator that thrived during the Eocene epoch, approximately 56 to 33.9 million years ago. This impressive specimen was discovered in the renowned fossil beds of Morocco, a region rich in marine fossils from the Paleogene period.

Otodus obliquus was an early mackerel shark, considered to be a close relative of the monstrous Megalodon. It could grow up to 30 feet (9 metres) in length and possessed powerful jaws lined with rows of large, triangular teeth, perfect for seizing and slicing through prey such as fish, rays, and marine mammals.

Sharks continuously grow and shed teeth throughout their lives. As their teeth wear down or break, they are quickly replaced. It’s estimated that sharks can shed thousands of teeth in a lifetime, making Otodus teeth a frequent and exciting find for fossil hunters.

Fossilised Otodus teeth, especially those from Morocco, are highly prized by collectors for their distinct shape—typically triangular with smooth cutting edges and visible root structures.

Eocene Information

The Eocene Period (56–33.9 million years ago) was a time of warm global temperatures and the rapid evolution of mammals following the extinction of the dinosaurs. The climate was hot and humid, with lush rainforests covering much of the planet, even near the poles. Mammals diversified into new ecological roles, with early primates, whales (like Basilosaurus), large herbivores, and carnivores emerging. Birds and reptiles also thrived, and the first grasses began spreading, setting the stage for later grassland ecosystems. By the late Eocene, the Earth’s climate cooled significantly, leading to the formation of the first Antarctic ice sheets and the eventual transition to the drier, cooler Oligocene Period.
