Ammonites are one of the most recognisable fossils around, this is due to their familiar spiral shape shell reminiscent of what we know as a snail shell, though these creatures are not related to snails at all. They were marine animals, present between 240 – 65 million years ago, that had a coiled external shell similar to that of the modern-day nautilus, and although they resembled a nautilus, these molluscs are more closely related to living Coleoids, i.e. octopus, squid, and cuttlefish.

These stunningly beautiful Ammonites have been sliced in half and polished to expose the amazingly colourful inner chambers of the fossil.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

Description

Offered here is a genuine, cut and polished ammonite fossil from the Cretaceous Period, discovered in the fossil-rich deposits of Madagascar. These beautiful marine fossils date back approximately 100 to 65 million years, showcasing the incredible biodiversity that once thrived in Earth’s ancient seas.

This ammonite specimen has been expertly sliced in half and polished to a smooth finish, revealing the exquisite internal chamber structure that once formed part of a living marine predator’s buoyancy system. The interior of the shell displays a mesmerizing arrangement of calcite-filled chambers, often in shades of amber, honey, brown, or deep earthy tones, with stunning natural crystalization and intricate fossil patterns. Each ammonite slice is a unique piece of natural art.

Geological & Fossil Details:

  • Specimen: Cut & Polished Ammonite
  • Age: Cretaceous Period (approx. 100–65 million years ago)
  • Location: Madagascar
  • Type: Extinct marine cephalopod (related to modern squid and cuttlefish)
  • Group: Mollusca – Class: Cephalopoda – Subclass: Ammonoidea
  • Scale Cube = 1cm – Please see photo for actual size

Ammonites were free-swimming marine animals that thrived in oceans across the globe for over 300 million years, until their extinction at the end of the Cretaceous. Despite their snail-like appearance, ammonites were not gastropods. They are actually more closely related to today’s coleoid cephalopods—including octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish—than to any shelled animal alive today.

The name “ammonite” is derived from the Egyptian god Ammon, whose spiral ram’s horns these fossils resembled. Their coiled, chambered shells provided buoyancy control, helping them navigate the seas in search of prey.

Why Choose a Polished Ammonite?

These sliced and polished ammonites are not only fascinating from a scientific perspective—they are also stunning decorative pieces, popular among fossil collectors, natural history enthusiasts, and interior designers alike. The polished finish highlights the fine structure of the chambers and mineralisation, turning an already impressive fossil into a showpiece suitable for display, gifts, or meditation altars.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
