Description

This listing features a rare and genuine Didymograptus sp. fossil, a member of the extinct group of colonial marine animals known as graptolites, dating from the Ordovician Period (~485 to 443 million years ago). This particular specimen was discovered in the renowned fossil locality of Abereiddy Bay, Wales, UK — a region famed for its well-preserved graptolite shales.

Graptolites were floating or sessile colonial animals, part of the class Graptolithina, within the phylum Hemichordata. They lived in oceans around the world from the Upper Cambrian to the Lower Carboniferous Period, and played a vital role in the marine ecosystem as planktonic organisms. The name graptolite comes from the Greek graptos (“written”) and lithos (“rock”), referring to their appearance, which often resembles ancient script etched into stone.

Didymograptus, a well-known genus of graptolite, is particularly abundant in Ordovician rocks and is used extensively by geologists as an index fossil to date marine sediments. Their delicate structures preserved in black shale or slate offer a captivating glimpse into prehistoric life, showcasing the formation of ancient colonial systems.

These fossils are not only scientifically significant but also beautifully ornamental. Their unique appearance and historical relevance make them perfect for fossil enthusiasts, educational purposes, or as a unique addition to any natural history collection.

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
