Description

This listing features a 100% genuine fossil specimen of a microbial mat, formed by ancient algal life more than 3.48 billion years ago, during the Precambrian Eon. This exceptional stromatolitic structure originates from the world-famous Dresser Formation, located in the North Pole Dome region of Western Australia.

Microbial mats, composed primarily of algae and other microorganisms, are the earliest known evidence of life on Earth. These layered structures formed in shallow marine environments where microbial colonies trapped and bound sediment particles, eventually becoming preserved as stromatolites—distinctive, finely layered biochemical accretionary fossils.

The Dresser Formation, part of the Pilbara Craton, is one of the oldest geological formations on Earth. It has provided crucial insights into early life and environments on our planet, including evidence of hydrothermal systems and some of the earliest known microbial ecosystems. This makes microbial mat specimens from this formation scientifically significant and historically invaluable.

Pre-Cambrian Information

The Precambrian refers to the vast stretch of time before the Cambrian Period, covering Earth’s formation (~4.6 billion years ago) to 541 million years ago. It is divided into three eons: the Hadean, Archean, and Proterozoic. During this time, Earth formed, oceans developed, and the first simple life appeared. In the Archean, single-celled organisms like bacteria and archaea thrived, while in the Proterozoic, photosynthetic cyanobacteria began producing oxygen, leading to the Great Oxygenation Event. The first eukaryotic cells (complex cells with nuclei) evolved, followed by multicellular life and soft-bodied organisms like Ediacaran fauna. The Precambrian ended with the Cambrian Explosion, a burst of life that led to the first complex animals.
