Mosasaurs were large marine reptiles that were well-adapted to living in the warm, shallow, epicontinental seas prevalent during the late Cretaceous Period. They breathed air & were powerful swimmers making them so well adapted to this environment that they gave birth to live young, rather than return to the shore to lay eggs, as sea turtles do. Mosasaurs had many qualities of a modern day snake, they had two rows of teeth in their upper jaw, the main set, and a smaller set toward the rear & center of their mouths. These teeth, like snakes, were thought to help hold onto & swallow lager prey whole. Their jaws could also expand, as snakes do, to help them swallow whole prey.

Description

Authentic Mosasaur Tooth Fossil – Cretaceous Period – Morocco

This specimen is a genuine Mosasaur tooth fossil from the Late Cretaceous Period (approx. 100–66 million years ago), discovered in the phosphate-rich fossil beds of Morocco. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and is the exact specimen shown in the photographs.

Mosasaurs were colossal marine reptiles that dominated the prehistoric seas during the last 25 million years of the Cretaceous. These apex predators could grow to lengths exceeding 15 meters (50 feet) and were the top hunters of their time. They were well adapted to life in warm, shallow seas, possessing streamlined bodies, strong paddle-like limbs, and powerful tails that enabled swift swimming and ambush hunting.

Like modern snakes, Mosasaurs had two rows of teeth in their upper jaws – the main set and an additional row positioned further back. This adaptation helped them grip slippery prey such as fish, ammonites, and even smaller marine reptiles. Their highly flexible jaws allowed them to swallow large prey whole, just as some snakes do today. Fossil evidence also suggests they gave birth to live young in the open ocean, rather than returning to shore like sea turtles.

This specimen offers a rare opportunity to own a real piece of natural history from one of the ocean’s greatest predators.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
