Description

Step back in time with this remarkable Jurassic-era ammonite fossil from the genus Perisphinctes, a well-known and beautifully ribbed ammonite that lived during the Late Jurassic period, approximately 160 to 150 million years ago. This genuine fossil specimen was found in France and represents a classic example of marine life from the ancient Tethys Ocean.

Ammonites are extinct marine molluscs that once thrived in the world’s oceans for over 300 million years. They are among the most iconic and widely collected fossils due to their coiled, spiral shells and the immense variety of species they represent. Although their shells resemble those of modern snails, ammonites are actually more closely related to living squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish – all members of the cephalopod family.

The genus Perisphinctes is particularly known for its distinctive ribbed shell and elegant spiral structure. These ammonites had open-coiled shells with strong radial ornamentation, and their fossils are often very well-preserved due to the fine-grained sediments in which they were buried. Perisphinctes is a key index fossil used in dating layers of Jurassic rock, making this specimen both a beautiful and scientifically significant piece.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
