Geological Hammer Fossil Hunting 18oz (500g)

£36.00

This hammer is the widely used in the UK. This is because it is made from the hardest tampered steel suitable for hitting rocks, and also of a small size. The benefit of Hickory hammers is that they absorb shock much better than solid forged ones. They have been specially made for children having very slightly rounded edges on the chisel edge, ensuring it is not dangerously sharp.

18oz (500g) – 320mm (length) x 115mm (head)

We also sell 300g, 200g and 100g for younger children.

An important note when buying geological hammers

“Whilst any good ironmonger can supply cold chisels and strong knives or trowels, he is very unlikely to have safe and suitable hammers in stock. The steel of ordinary domestic and many trade hammers is far too soft for use on most rocks. It will splinter and flying fragments of steel can cause nasty wounds, particularly to the eyes, not only of the hammerer but also of his companions.”
