Description

Mammites nodosoides Ammonite Fossil – Cretaceous, El-Rachidia Province, Morocco

This impressive Mammites nodosoides ammonite fossil originates from the fossil-rich deposits of El-Rachidia Province in Morocco, a globally recognised region for exceptional Cretaceous marine fossils. Dating to the Late Cretaceous, specifically the Cenomanian stage (approximately 100–94 million years ago), this specimen represents a classic and highly sought-after ammonite species. The fossil shown in the photograph is the exact specimen you will receive, carefully selected for its preservation, structure, and visual appeal. It is supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee card, confirming its genuine origin.

Geological Setting and Age

During the Cenomanian, much of present-day North Africa was covered by a warm, shallow epicontinental sea. The sedimentary limestones and marls of the El-Rachidia region formed in this marine environment, preserving a diverse assemblage of ammonites, bivalves, and marine reptiles. Mammites nodosoides is a well-known index fossil for the Cenomanian and is often associated with specific biozones used for correlating marine strata across Europe and North Africa. Its presence helps geologists accurately date and interpret ancient marine environments.

Taxonomy and Scientific Classification

Mammites nodosoides belongs to the family Acanthoceratidae, within the superfamily Acanthoceratoidea and the order Ammonitida. This group is characterised by robust, ornamented shells and complex suture patterns. The species was formally described by Schlotheim in the early 19th century and remains one of the most distinctive ammonites from the Cretaceous period.

Morphology and Distinctive Features

This ammonite displays the classic features that define Mammites nodosoides. The shell is moderately involute with rounded whorls and strong, evenly spaced ribs extending across the surface. Prominent nodules (tubercles) are visible along the flanks and ventrolateral shoulders, giving the fossil its characteristic nodose appearance. These structural features not only contributed to the organism’s strength and buoyancy control during life but also make it highly attractive as a display specimen today. The natural mineralisation enhances the contrast between the fossil and surrounding matrix, highlighting its intricate detail.

Authenticity and Presentation

This is a genuine fossil specimen sourced from Morocco and carefully prepared to reveal its natural features while maintaining its geological integrity. The image provided shows the exact fossil you will receive, ensuring complete transparency. Each specimen is unique, with natural variations in colour, texture, and preservation that add to its individuality and appeal. The included Certificate of Authenticity provides assurance for collectors and gift buyers alike.

Collector and Display Appeal

Ammonites are among the most iconic fossils, symbolising ancient marine life and evolutionary history. Mammites nodosoides, with its bold ornamentation and scientific importance, is particularly desirable among collectors. Specimens from Morocco are renowned for their quality and are widely appreciated in both private collections and educational displays. This fossil makes an excellent addition to any collection, whether for study, display, or as a unique natural history gift.

This carefully chosen piece offers a tangible connection to the Cretaceous seas, combining scientific significance with striking natural beauty.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
