Description

A

For sale is a genuine fossil specimen of Deltoideum delta, an extinct species of oyster from the Jurassic period, specifically the Kimmeridge Clay Formation (~157 to 152 million years ago). This fossil was discovered at Wyke Regis, Dorset, UK, a site known for its rich fossil beds and exceptional preservation of Jurassic marine life.

Deltoideum delta is closely related to the more commonly known Gryphaea genus, also called “devil’s toenails” due to their curved and gnarled shape. These bivalves lived on the seafloor in warm, shallow Jurassic seas, attaching themselves to firm substrates and filtering plankton from the water column.

Fossils from the Kimmeridge Clay Formation represent a time when the region now known as southern England was submerged beneath a tropical sea. The mud-rich sediments deposited in these conditions provided excellent preservation for marine organisms, making this formation one of the most important geological sequences for Jurassic fossils in the UK.

This specimen shows excellent preservation of the classic curved, ribbed shell typical of Jurassic oysters. It has been carefully hand-selected for its quality and completeness, and professionally photographed.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
