Description

This listing features a genuine Cretaceous ammonite fossil half, beautifully sliced and polished to reveal the colourful and intricate internal chambers of this ancient marine animal. This single half originates from the fossil-rich region of Madagascar and is estimated to be around 100 to 145 million years old.

Ammonites are among the most iconic and widely collected fossils due to their distinctive spiral shell structure. Though they resemble snail shells in shape, ammonites were actually cephalopods—closely related to modern squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish. They used their coiled shells for buoyancy control in ancient marine environments.

The interior of this ammonite half showcases a range of natural mineral colours and patterns, with each chamber having undergone mineralisation during the fossilisation process. These features make each piece completely unique and perfect for display.

Geological Context: Madagascar is known for its exceptional preservation of marine fossils, and this ammonite is no exception. The fossil was formed in Cretaceous-aged marine sediments, deposited in warm shallow seas that once covered the region. Over millions of years, mineral-rich groundwater replaced the original organic material, preserving the shell in stunning detail.

Cretaceous Information

The Cretaceous Period (145–66 million years ago) was the final era of the Mesozoic, marked by the dominance of dinosaurs and the rise of flowering plants. It had a warm, greenhouse climate, with high sea levels that created vast shallow inland seas. Marine life flourished, including mosasaurs, ammonites, and rudist reefs, while the land was ruled by iconic dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Spinosaurus. Mammals and birds diversified, and insects thrived. The period ended with the mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, wiping out the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals in the Cenozoic.
