Genuine Gleviceras Ammonite Fossil

This carefully selected fossil is a genuine Gleviceras sp. ammonite from Radstock in Somerset, UK. It dates to the Pliensbachian stage of the Lower Jurassic. Lower Jurassic Pliensbachian Geology

The Pliensbachian Age lasted from approximately 193 to 182 million years ago. During this part of the Early Jurassic, southern Britain was largely covered by marine waters. Mud, carbonate-rich sediment and other material accumulated on the seabed, preserving evidence of ammonites, belemnites, bivalves and other organisms. Changing water depth, sediment supply and oxygen conditions created a varied sequence of fossil-bearing rocks.

Ammonites are exceptionally useful for dating Jurassic marine strata. Their lineages evolved rapidly, individual species commonly existed for limited intervals and shells were distributed across wide marine regions. Palaeontologists use characteristic ammonite assemblages to divide the Jurassic into biozones and to correlate rock layers between separate localities.

Gleviceras Ammonite

Gleviceras is an extinct ammonite genus within the order Ammonitida. Ammonites were marine cephalopods related to living squid, octopus and nautilus. Their shells grew in a coil and were divided internally into chambers. The animal occupied the final body chamber, while sealed earlier chambers helped control buoyancy.

The identification sp. means that the fossil can be assigned confidently to the genus Gleviceras while no more specific species name is asserted. This is a standard scientific convention and preserves useful taxonomic information without overstating the evidence available from an individual specimen. Identification considers features such as coiling, whorl proportions, umbilical width, ribbing and the form of the shell’s outer margin.

Fossil preservation varies naturally. A specimen may retain portions of shell, mineral replacement, an external impression or an internal mould formed when sediment entered the shell. Matrix, worn areas, small fractures and irregular edges record burial, mineralisation and later exposure. These authentic geological features are part of the specimen rather than manufactured defects.

Radstock, Somerset

Radstock is a classic British Lower Jurassic fossil locality. The district is better known historically for coal mining, but excavations, quarries and construction also revealed Jurassic strata above the older Carboniferous rocks. Fossils recovered from the Radstock area have contributed significantly to understanding the Pliensbachian marine succession of southwest England.

A Gleviceras ammonite from Radstock therefore carries meaningful locality interest. It represents an extinct cephalopod from the sea that covered Somerset during the Early Jurassic and helps illustrate how inland exposures preserve the same broad marine history seen at better-known coastal sites.
