Grammoceras striatulum Ammonite Fossil | Upper Toarcian, Jurassic | Ravenscar Yorkshire UK | Alice Purnell Collection

£24.00

Fossil Type & Species:

This listing features a genuine fossil ammonite of Grammoceras striatulum, a fine and delicate species from the Upper Toarcian Stage of the Lower Jurassic Period. This scientifically significant specimen was collected from Ravenscar, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom, and is part of the prestigious Alice Purnell Collection, which is known for its expertly curated British fossils.

Geological Formation & Insight:

Grammoceras striatulum is a member of the Grammoceratidae family and is known for its smooth, flattened, discoidal shell with tight coiling and fine radial striations (hence the name striatulum). These ammonites were nektonic (free-swimming) marine cephalopods that thrived in the warm, shallow seas of the Early Jurassic.

This specimen originates from the Whitby Mudstone Formation, which represents a period of widespread marine deposition during the Upper Toarcian (~180 million years ago). The fine-grained mudstones and shales of this formation were laid down in an oxygen-poor seafloor environment that allowed for excellent fossil preservation.

Ravenscar, located along the world-renowned Jurassic Coast of Yorkshire, is a fossiliferous locality famous for its ammonites, belemnites, and marine reptiles. Specimens from this site often display exquisite detail, including delicate ribbing and natural shell geometry, as seen in this Grammoceras striatulum.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
