Description
This beautiful and scientifically significant ammonite fossil is a superb example of Graphoceras concavum, an extinct genus of ammonite from the Middle Bajocian Stage of the Jurassic Period, approximately 170 million years ago. It was discovered in the well-known fossil-rich beds of Frogden Oborne, near Sherborne, Dorset, UK—a classic locality of the British Jurassic.
Ammonites like Graphoceras were marine cephalopods that inhabited the warm Jurassic seas. Their coiled, chambered shells were used for buoyancy control, allowing them to move throughout the oceanic water column. Graphoceras concavum is known for its finely ribbed shell and slightly involute coiling, making it a distinct and recognisable species among Jurassic ammonites.
This specimen is part of the acclaimed Alice Purnell Collection, renowned for housing top-quality, well-documented fossil specimens. It has been meticulously cleaned and prepared, preserving both scientific and aesthetic value—making it ideal for fossil collectors, educators, or display.
