Description

This listing features a genuine Didymograptus sp. graptolite fossil from the Ordovician Period, discovered in the iconic fossil-rich site of Abereiddy Bay, Wales, UK. This specimen offers an incredible glimpse into early marine life that flourished around 470 to 443 million years ago.

Graptolites were colonial animals that floated freely in ancient seas or attached themselves to the seafloor. Their name is derived from the Greek words graptos, meaning “written,” and lithos, meaning “rock”. This is due to their distinctive appearance on the shale or mudstone matrix, often resembling delicate etchings or hieroglyphs.

Didymograptus is a well-known genus within the graptolite group and played an important role in biostratigraphy—helping geologists date rock layers with exceptional precision. These colonial organisms lived in tube-like structures called thecae that branched out from a common origin. As they are planktic organisms, they drifted through the ancient seas in vast numbers, forming part of the prehistoric food chain.

This specimen is from the Ordovician-aged mudstones of the Welsh coastline, a region renowned for its well-preserved fossil deposits. The detail in this fossil is exceptional, making it a must-have for collectors, educators, and palaeontology enthusiasts.

Ordovician Information

The Ordovician Period (485–443 million years ago) was a time of marine expansion and biodiversity growth, following the Cambrian Explosion. Warm, shallow seas covered much of the continents, supporting trilobites, brachiopods, corals, and the first true reefs. Jawless fish (early vertebrates) diversified, and the first sea scorpions (eurypterids) became dominant predators. On land, the first primitive plants (moss-like bryophytes) began colonizing damp environments. The climate was initially warm, but by the late Ordovician, a major ice age caused a drastic drop in sea levels, triggering the Ordovician-Silurian mass extinction, which wiped out nearly 85% of marine species. Despite this, the period laid the foundation for the rise of more complex ecosystems in the Silurian.
