Hammatoceras jurense Ammonite Fossil – Upper Toarcian Jurassic France, Authentic Specimen

£52.80

A finely preserved specimen of Hammatoceras jurense, a coiled fossil ammonite from the Upper Toarcian Stage of the Early Jurassic, approximately 180 million years old. This ammonite was collected in France, a region well-known for its exceptional fossiliferous strata from this geological stage.

Hammatoceras is easily identified by its strongly ribbed, planispirally coiled shell and well-developed keel, with H. jurense representing one of the classic species used for biostratigraphic correlation in the Toarcian.

Fossil Type: Ammonite (extinct marine cephalopod)

Species: Hammatoceras jurense

Geological Age: Lower Jurassic – Upper Toarcian Stage

Formation: Likely part of the Toarcian clay-limestone sequences common in northern and central France

Depositional Environment: Formed in a calm, offshore marine basin under low-oxygen conditions. These sedimentary environments favoured preservation of cephalopods and other marine invertebrates in fine-grained limestone or marl.

Morphological Features:

  • Strongly ribbed shell with prominent radial ribs
  • Planispiral coiling with an open umbilicus
  • Distinct keel running along the venter
  • May show partial preservation of original shell material or infill

Notable:

  • Key zone fossil for the Upper Toarcian of Europe
  • Collected from a classic French Jurassic locality
  • Ideal for collectors, educators, and display
  • Actual specimen shown in the listing photograph

Authenticity: All of our fossils are 100% genuine natural specimens and are supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity. The image includes a 1cm scale rule or cube for accurate sizing.

This Hammatoceras jurense fossil offers a striking example of Early Jurassic ammonites, combining scientific significance with elegant natural form. A must-have for fossil enthusiasts and collectors alike.
