£36.00

Genuine Jurassic Ammonite from Somerset, England

This impressive 6.5 inch Harpoceras fossil ammonite originates from the Beacon Limestone Formation of Ilminster, Somerset, UK, one of Britain’s most historically important Jurassic fossil localities. Dating to the Early Jurassic Period (Toarcian Stage, approximately 182–174 million years ago), this specimen represents a classic British ammonite from a globally recognised marine sequence. The fossil pictured is the exact specimen you will receive, carefully selected for its size, preservation, and aesthetic appeal.

All of our fossils are 100% genuine natural specimens and are supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity for complete peace of mind.

Fossil Type and Taxonomy

This specimen belongs to the extinct cephalopod group Ammonoidea, order Ammonitida, family Hildoceratidae, and superfamily Hildoceratoidea. The genus Harpoceras is especially prized by collectors and researchers for its elegant form and well-defined shell ornamentation. Harpoceras ammonites are widely used as index fossils, meaning they are crucial for dating and correlating Early Jurassic marine strata across Europe.

Morphology and Notable Features

Harpoceras ammonites are characterised by their compressed, discoidal shell, a distinct sharp keel along the outer rim, and strongly curved (falcate) ribbing that sweeps forward across the flanks. These features are clearly visible on this specimen, highlighting the hydrodynamic shell design that helped the animal move efficiently through Jurassic seas. The preservation allows excellent appreciation of both the overall form and finer sculptural details, making it a standout display fossil.

Geological Formation and Environment

The Beacon Limestone of Somerset is a condensed marine limestone deposited during the Toarcian, representing sedimentation in a warm, shallow epicontinental sea that covered much of what is now southern Britain. This environment supported abundant marine life, including ammonites, belemnites, and marine reptiles. The formation is renowned for producing robust, well-preserved ammonites with strong relief and contrast, highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Discovery, Preparation, and Care

This Harpoceras fossil was personally discovered by our team members, Alister and Alison, on 05 December 2025during responsible field collecting in Somerset. Following recovery, the specimen was professionally cleaned, prepared, and stabilised by Alison, ensuring both long-term preservation and visual clarity while retaining its natural character. No composite work or restoration has been carried out beyond careful conservation.

Size, Authenticity, and Display

The ammonite measures approximately 6.5 inches across; for full sizing and orientation, please refer to the accompanying photographs. This fossil makes an excellent collector’s piece, educational specimen, or statement display fossil, equally suitable for private collections, teaching, or interior décor with a genuine geological story.

A rare opportunity to own a museum-quality British Jurassic ammonite with documented provenance, expert preparation, and guaranteed authenticity.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
