Harpoceras falciferum ammonite fossil – falciferum zone, upper lias, lower jurassic – whitby, yorkshire, uk – alice purnell collection

Original price was: £60.00.Current price is: £54.00.

This striking fossil is an authentic specimen of Harpoceras falciferum, a beautifully preserved ammonite from the famous Falciferum Zone of the Upper Lias, dating back to the Lower Jurassic period (~180 million years ago). It was discovered near Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK, one of the most renowned fossil localities in the world for Jurassic ammonites.

Harpoceras is known for its compressed, discoidal shell with sharp falcate (sickle-shaped) ribs that curve forward over the venter, giving the genus its name. These ammonites were fast-swimming nektonic predators and scavengers that lived in the warm epicontinental seas that covered much of what is now Europe during the Early Jurassic.

The dark colouration and preservation of Harpoceras specimens from Whitby are typical of the bituminous shales in which they are found. These shales, rich in organic matter, created an anoxic (oxygen-poor) environment on the seafloor, perfect for fossil preservation.

This piece comes from the Alice Purnell Collection, a recognised source of high-quality British fossils. It has been carefully cleaned and prepared to highlight the intricate shell detail and overall form of the specimen.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
