Unearth a stunning piece of British palaeontological history with this Haugia variabilis ammonite fossil from the renowned Beacon Limestone Formation of Ilminster, Somerset. Dating back to the Toarcian Stage of the Lower Jurassic, approximately 180 million years ago, this extinct cephalopod is a member of the Hildoceratidae family, known for its compressed, involute shell and strong ribbing—a distinctive marker of its genus.

This beautifully preserved specimen was discovered on 13 May 2024 by our dedicated fossil team members Alister and Alison, and has been professionally cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison to reveal its exquisite natural detail.

The genus Haugia is named in honour of French palaeontologist Édouard Haug, and is a prized find among Jurassic ammonite collectors due to its defined ribbing and rarity in some localities. This particular specimen offers a superb example of the species’ shell morphology and preservation, making it an excellent addition to any fossil collection.
