Description
This listing features a genuine and well-preserved Hemicidaris fossil, an excellent example of a regular echinoid (sea urchin) from the Oxfordian Stage of the Late Jurassic Period (approximately 163 to 157 million years ago). This fossil was collected from the marine sedimentary deposits of Lorraine, France.
Geology & Origin:
During the Oxfordian, the region that is now Lorraine in northeastern France was part of a shallow epicontinental sea that supported diverse marine life. Regular echinoids like Hemicidaris lived along the seafloor, using their spines for protection and locomotion. Their tests (hard outer shells) were often preserved in fine-grained marine sediments, making them a prized fossil among collectors and paleontologists alike.
