Original price was: £36.00.Current price is: £32.40.

Discover the beauty of ancient marine ecosystems with this authentic Hexagonia Coral Fossil, dating from the Middle Devonian period and found in the fossil-rich region of Assa Zag, Morocco. This well-preserved specimen captures the structure of prehistoric reef-building corals, offering a rare glimpse into ocean life from over 390 million years ago.

Hexagonia is a genus of rugose (horn) corals, which were solitary or colonial marine animals that built reef structures during the Paleozoic Era. These corals had a hard, calcareous exoskeleton and lived in warm, shallow seas. This specimen features the classic hexagonal polyp structures, indicative of colonial growth, and has been preserved in remarkable detail within limestone deposits of the Devonian seabed.

The Assa Zag region in Morocco is well-known for yielding high-quality fossils from multiple geological time periods. The Devonian strata here provide a window into one of the most biologically diverse marine periods in Earth’s history, known as the “Age of Fishes.” Fossils from this region are highly collectible and valuable for educational and display purposes.

This is a carefully selected, one-of-a-kind specimen, and the exact fossil shown in the listing photos is the one you will receive. A 1cm scale cube or rule squares is included in the images for accurate size reference—please refer to the photos for full dimensions.

Devonian Information

The Devonian Period (419–359 million years ago), known as the "Age of Fishes," was a time of major evolutionary advances in both marine and terrestrial life. The oceans were dominated by armored placoderm fish, early sharks, and lobe-finned fish like Tiktaalik, which had features that helped vertebrates transition to land. Coral reefs flourished, and ammonites became more diverse. On land, the first forests appeared, with early trees like Archaeopteris, leading to a drop in atmospheric carbon dioxide and climate cooling. The first tetrapods (four-legged vertebrates) began evolving from fish, marking a critical step in the evolution of amphibians. The period ended with the Devonian extinction, likely caused by ocean anoxia and climate shifts, wiping out many marine species and reshaping ecosystems.
