Hildoceras bifrons Ammonite Fossil | Toarcian, Jurassic | Ravenscar Yorkshire UK | Alice Purnell Collection | Genuine with Certificate

Original price was: £36.00.Current price is: £32.40.

Fossil Type & Species:

This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Hildoceras bifrons, an iconic and widely recognised species from the Toarcian Stage of the Lower Jurassic Period. This beautifully preserved specimen comes from the Ravenscar locality in North Yorkshire, United Kingdom, and is part of the highly respected Alice Purnell Collection, which is known for its exceptional quality and scientific value.

Geological Formation & Insight:

Hildoceras bifrons belongs to the family Hildoceratidae, a group of strongly ribbed, evolute ammonites with well-defined whorl structures. This species is a key biostratigraphic index fossil, defining the bifrons Zone of the Toarcian and making it crucial for dating Early Jurassic marine deposits.

This fossil was collected from the Whitby Mudstone Formation, deposited approximately 182–180 million years ago during a time when much of the UK was submerged under a shallow, low-oxygen marine environment. These conditions resulted in fine-grained mudstones and shales, which are known for exceptional fossil preservation — especially ammonites, belemnites, and marine reptiles.

Ravenscar, located on the North Yorkshire Jurassic Coast, is a classic collecting site that continues to yield ammonites with incredible detail, including suture lines, ribbing, and often near-complete whorls. Hildoceras bifrons is one of the most frequently sought-after species from this site due to its visual appeal and geological importance.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
