Echinoids belong to the echinoderms, a group of exclusively marine animals that also includes starfish, brittle stars and crinoids. Unlike the nearly circular, radially symmetrical tests of many regular sea urchins, irregular echinoids developed a more distinctly bilateral body plan adapted to life on or within soft seabed sediment.
Morphology and Natural Features
Holaster gregoryi possessed a rigid shell, correctly known as a test, constructed from interlocking calcite plates. Its body form was characteristically heart-like to suboval, with a defined front and rear rather than the evenly rounded outline associated with modern regular sea urchins.
The upper surface carried petaloid ambulacral areas containing rows of pores through which the tube feet once extended. These structures assisted with respiration, movement and interaction with the surrounding sediment. The mouth was positioned on the underside of the animal, while the rearward position of the anal opening reflects the directional movement and specialised lifestyle of irregular echinoids.
Depending on preservation, this specimen may display portions of the test outline, ambulacral pattern, plate boundaries, pore pairs, natural chalk infill or weathered surface textures. These authentic features were formed through a combination of the animal’s original anatomy, burial, mineralisation and millions of years of geological alteration.

The Chalk Group is dominated by fine-grained, pale limestone formed largely from microscopic calcium-carbonate remains that accumulated on an ancient seabed. These sediments were deposited in an extensive marine environment across southern and eastern England. Beachy Head provides an internationally recognisable exposure of this Upper Cretaceous chalk succession, with its coastal cliffs preserving millions of years of geological history.
During the Cenomanian, southern Britain lay beneath a warm sea supporting a diverse ecosystem of echinoids, ammonites, brachiopods, bivalves, sponges and other marine organisms. Holaster gregoryi was a benthic animal associated with the seafloor, where irregular echinoids were adapted for moving across or burrowing into soft carbonate sediment.
After death, the echinoid became buried within calcareous seabed material. Over immense spans of time, the surrounding sediment compacted and lithified into chalk, preserving the test as a fossil and creating the specimen available today.
