This ammonite comes from Deux-Sèvres, France, and is dated to the Lower Callovian. The Callovian is the final stage of the Middle Jurassic, approximately 166 to 164 million years ago. During this time, much of western Europe was covered by warm, shallow to moderately deep epicontinental seas. These marine environments supported a rich and varied fauna including ammonites, belemnites, nautiloids, bivalves, brachiopods, gastropods, echinoids, crinoids, corals, fish, and marine reptiles.

Deux-Sèvres and the wider western French Jurassic successions are known for marine sedimentary rocks that preserve important ammonite faunas. Fossils from this region record a time when sea levels, sedimentation, and marine ecosystems were changing across Europe. Callovian ammonites are especially valued because they are widely used in biostratigraphy, helping geologists divide the Jurassic into finer time intervals based on distinctive fossil assemblages.

Fossil Type and Species

Homoeoplanulites paekachoffati is an ammonite, an extinct marine cephalopod related to modern squid, cuttlefish, octopus, and nautilus. Ammonites had chambered shells divided internally by walls called septa. The living animal occupied the final outer body chamber, while the earlier chambers helped regulate buoyancy as it moved through the water column.

Homoeoplanulites is generally associated with the ammonite order Ammonitida and the superfamily Perisphinctoidea, one of the most characteristic ammonite groups of the Jurassic Period.
