The Hoploscaphites constrictus Ammonite

Hoploscaphites is an extinct ammonite genus belonging to the distinctive scaphitid group. Ammonites were marine cephalopods with chambered shells. While many ammonites retained a regular spiral throughout growth, scaphitids developed a modified adult shell in which the later body chamber departed from the earlier coil. This combination of a coiled juvenile portion and a differently curved adult section creates a recognisable shell form.

Bearpaw Formation Geology

The Bearpaw Formation is an Upper Cretaceous marine rock unit of western Canada. Its sediments accumulated in the Western Interior Seaway, the broad inland sea that covered large areas of North America during the Late Cretaceous. Fine marine muds settled on the sea floor, later becoming shale and preserving evidence of the organisms that lived in and around those waters.

Ammonites were active parts of these marine ecosystems. Their chambered shells could enter the sediment after death and become buried, compressed, mineralised or preserved with surrounding matrix. A Hoploscaphites fossil from the Bearpaw Formation provides a direct connection to the ancient seaway and the geological history recorded by Alberta’s sedimentary rocks.
