Description

Hyperlioceras Ammonite Fossil from Dorset

Genuine Lower Bajocian Specimen

This listing is for the exact Hyperlioceras species ammonite fossil shown in the photographs. It is a genuine natural specimen from Bradford Abbas, Dorset, UK, preserved in Bed 6c of the Inferior Oolite Group and dating to the Lower Bajocian Discites Zone. The fossil has been carefully selected and photographed individually, so the specimen pictured is the actual piece you will receive. Please refer to the sizing photograph for full measurements and inspect all images for its precise condition, colour, matrix and surface detail.

Lower Bajocian Geology

The Bajocian Stage forms part of the Middle Jurassic and began approximately 170 million years ago. Southern Britain was then influenced by warm, shallow seas in which carbonate mud, sand, shell debris and iron-rich grains accumulated. These sediments later became the varied limestones and associated beds of the Inferior Oolite Group.

Bradford Abbas is a classic Dorset fossil locality. Its carefully studied succession preserves marine fossils in distinct beds, providing detailed evidence of changing Jurassic environments. The recorded position in Bed 6c and the Discites Zone gives this specimen useful stratigraphic context. Biozones are intervals defined by characteristic fossils and allow geologists to correlate rocks of similar age across different localities.

About Hyperlioceras

Hyperlioceras is an extinct genus of ammonoid cephalopod. Ammonites were marine molluscs with chambered, spirally coiled shells and belong to the wider cephalopod group that includes living squid, cuttlefish and nautiluses. The animal occupied the final body chamber, while earlier chambers separated by septa assisted with buoyancy.

Hyperlioceras ammonites are associated with the early Bajocian and are important in biostratigraphic work. Their shells display successive whorls and characteristic ornament, including ribs that contribute to the sculptural appearance prized by collectors. Natural preservation reveals these features to varying degrees. The photographs accurately show the morphology, mineral tones, remaining host rock and completeness of this individual specimen.

Scientific and Collecting Interest

Ammonites evolved rapidly and were widely distributed through Jurassic seas, making them valuable index fossils. Particular forms help palaeontologists compare strata and refine relative ages. A Hyperlioceras from the Discites Zone therefore provides a tangible record of early Bajocian marine life and a useful example of how fossils help divide geological time.

This specimen is suitable for a palaeontology collection, geology teaching display, natural history cabinet or distinctive gift. Its named genus, Bradford Abbas locality, bed number and biozone make it especially appealing to collectors who value properly documented fossils.

Exact Specimen and Authenticity

You will receive the exact fossil pictured, not a stock example. Fossils are natural geological objects and may retain ancient fractures, matrix, mineral variation, weathering or preparation marks that form part of their history. Review every photograph carefully and use the sizing image for dimensions.

A generic Certificate of Authenticity card with a lifetime guarantee is included. The fossil will be packed carefully for safe transit and protection of the condition shown.
