Description

Idiohamites Heteromorph Ammonite Fossil from Provence France

Genuine Upper Aptian Specimen

This listing is for the exact Idiohamites heteromorph ammonite shown in the photographs. It is a genuine natural specimen from Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France, dating to the Upper Aptian interval of the Lower Cretaceous. The fossil has been carefully selected and photographed individually, so the pictured specimen is the actual piece you will receive. Please use the sizing photograph for full measurements and inspect every image for its condition, colour, matrix and preserved detail.

Upper Aptian Geology

The Aptian Stage belongs to the Early Cretaceous and spans approximately 125 to 113 million years ago. During this interval, southeastern France formed part of a marine basin connected to the ancient Tethys Ocean. Fine sediment accumulated on the sea floor and preserved diverse ammonites and other marine organisms.

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is internationally known for its Lower Cretaceous fossil localities. Its folded and exposed marine strata provide an exceptional record of changing environments and ammonite evolution. A specimen with a regional provenance and geological stage retains valuable scientific and educational context.

About Idiohamites

Idiohamites is an extinct genus of heteromorph ammonite. Rather than forming a regular flat spiral, its shell developed open curved or elongated sections. This distinctive growth form gives the fossil strong display appeal and illustrates the remarkable evolutionary diversity of Cretaceous ammonoids.

Ammonites were marine cephalopod molluscs related within the wider group to living squid, cuttlefish and nautiluses. Their shells contained chambers separated by septa, while the living animal occupied the final body chamber. Ribs and other ornament strengthened the shell and help palaeontologists distinguish different forms. The photographs accurately show this specimen’s authentic morphology, mineral tones, matrix and completeness.

Scientific and Collecting Interest

Ammonites evolved rapidly and were widely distributed through ancient seas, making them useful index fossils for correlating rock layers and establishing relative ages. Heteromorph ammonites are especially interesting because their unconventional shells provide evidence of specialised development, buoyancy and ecological adaptation.

This Idiohamites specimen is suitable for a specialist heteromorph collection, a French Cretaceous display, a geology teaching cabinet or a distinctive natural history gift. Its Upper Aptian age and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence provenance make it attractive to collectors who value properly documented fossils.

Exact Fossil and Authenticity

You will receive the exact fossil pictured, not a stock example. Fossils are natural geological objects and may retain ancient fractures, matrix, mineral variation, weathering or preparation marks. These features form part of the specimen’s authentic history. Review all photographs carefully and use the sizing image for dimensions.

A generic Certificate of Authenticity card with a lifetime guarantee is included. The specimen will be packed carefully for safe transit and protection of the condition shown.
