Indocephalites Ammonite Fossil | Lower Callovian, Jurassic | Cotswolds Water Park, Gloucestershire UK | Alice Purnell Collection

£48.00

Fossil Type & Species:

This listing features a genuine ammonite fossil of Indocephalites sp., a fascinating genus from the Lower Callovian Stage of the Jurassic Period. This particular specimen was discovered at the renowned Cotswolds Water Park in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, and comes from the respected Alice Purnell Collection, known for its scientifically valuable and expertly curated British fossils.

Geological Formation & Insight:

Indocephalites is a genus of moderately evolute ammonites within the Stephanoceratoidea, notable for their ribbed shells and biostratigraphic importance. These ammonites represent a key evolutionary stage during the Middle Jurassic and are often used in regional correlation of Callovian marine strata.

This specimen was recovered from the Oxford Clay Formation, specifically dated to the Lower Callovian (~166–163 million years ago). During this time, southern Britain was submerged under a shallow tropical sea — ideal conditions for preserving marine life. The fine clays and muds of this formation captured exquisite fossil details, often preserving ammonites with their delicate ribbing and coiling intact.

The Cotswolds Water Park, now a well-known fossil-hunting locality, is part of this stratigraphic unit and has yielded a wide array of marine fossils, particularly ammonites and belemnites.
