Iridescent caloceras johnstoni ammonite fossil – jurassic blue lias, watchet somerset uk – genuine british fossil with certificate

Original price was: £36.00.Current price is: £28.80.

This listing features a truly stunning iridescent fossil ammonite – Caloceras johnstoni, discovered in the Blue Lias Formation near Watchet, Somerset, UK. This specimen dates to the Early Jurassic Period, around 200 million years ago, and exhibits a rare and beautiful natural iridescent sheen across its shell.

Caloceras johnstoni is a species of extinct ammonite, a group of marine cephalopods closely related to modern octopuses and squid. These ancient creatures swam the shallow seas of what is now Britain, using jet propulsion to navigate while their coiled shells helped regulate buoyancy. The shells were divided into chambers, with the animal living in the outermost one.

This particular specimen is a premium example, exhibiting natural iridescence—a shimmering rainbow effect caused by light refracting through thin layers of aragonite in the shell. Such preservation is highly sought-after by collectors and can only occur under very specific geological conditions.

The fossil was carefully discovered by our own team members, Alister and Alison, on 29 September 2024, and has been expertly cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison to bring out its finest detail and colour.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
