Iridescent Caloceras johnstoni Ammonite Fossil Blue Lias Jurassic Watchet Somerset UK

Original price was: £60.00.Current price is: £48.00.

This listing features a truly stunning iridescent fossil ammonite – Caloceras johnstoni, discovered in the Blue Lias Formation near Watchet, Somerset, UK. This specimen dates to the Early Jurassic Period, around 200 million years ago, and exhibits a rare and beautiful natural iridescent sheen across its shell.

Caloceras johnstoni is a species of extinct ammonite, a group of marine cephalopods closely related to modern octopuses and squid. These ancient creatures swam the shallow seas of what is now Britain, using jet propulsion to navigate while their coiled shells helped regulate buoyancy. The shells were divided into chambers, with the animal living in the outermost one.

This particular specimen is a premium example, exhibiting natural iridescence—a shimmering rainbow effect caused by light refracting through thin layers of aragonite in the shell. Such preservation is highly sought-after by collectors and can only occur under very specific geological conditions.

The fossil was carefully discovered by our own team members, Alister and Alison, on 29 September 2024, and has been expertly cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison to bring out its finest detail and colour.

Description

Iridescent Caloceras johnstoni Ammonite Fossil

This genuine fossil specimen is identified as Caloceras johnstoni, an ammonite associated with the Blue Lias and Jurassic geology of Watchet, Somerset, UK. Its iridescent appearance gives the specimen attractive visual character, making it an appealing addition to a fossil collection, natural history display, geological study collection or ammonite-themed interior display.

Identification and Geological Interest

Caloceras johnstoni is an ammonite fossil. Ammonites were extinct marine cephalopods with coiled shells, related in a broad zoological sense to modern squid, cuttlefish and nautiluses. Their fossilised shells are valued by collectors for their scientific importance, distinctive form and connection with ancient marine environments.

The specimen is associated with the Blue Lias, a well-known Jurassic geological unit. The Blue Lias is recognised for its fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks and has long been important to palaeontology and geology. Jurassic ammonites such as Caloceras provide an enduring link to marine life from this period and are particularly interesting to collectors who focus on stratigraphy, extinct cephalopods or the fossil heritage of the United Kingdom.

Locality

This specimen is from Watchet, Somerset, UK. The Watchet area is of interest to fossil collectors because of its Jurassic geology and association with the Blue Lias. A locality-linked fossil can add educational value to a collection by connecting the specimen with a specific geological region rather than presenting it only as an attractive natural object.

Display and Collecting

The iridescent visual effect makes this Caloceras johnstoni ammonite especially suitable for display in a cabinet, study, office, classroom or home collection. It can also be used as a conversation piece for anyone interested in ammonites, Jurassic fossils, British geology and palaeontology. Its named identification and geological association make it suitable for collectors who enjoy recording fossil localities and researching the rocks in which specimens are found.
