£24.00

Exceptional Iridescent Psiloceras Ammonite from Somerset, UK

This striking multi-slab fossil features beautifully preserved Psiloceras ammonites displaying natural iridescence, sourced from the famous Blue Lias Formation at Doniford Bay, near Watchet, Somerset. Dating to the earliest Jurassic (Hettangian stage, approximately 201–199 million years ago), this specimen captures a moment shortly after the end-Triassic extinction, when ammonites rapidly diversified in the ancient seas.

Discovered by our dedicated team members, Alister and Alison, this fossil has been expertly cleaned, prepared, and treated by Alison to enhance both its natural beauty and structural integrity. The photograph shows the exact specimen you will receive, ensuring complete confidence in your purchase.

Species Overview – Psiloceras Ammonite

Psiloceras is one of the earliest Jurassic ammonite genera and serves as an important index fossil for the base of the Jurassic system. Belonging to the family Psiloceratidae within the order Ammonitida, these ammonites are characterised by their smooth, evolute shells with simple, rounded whorls and minimal ornamentation.

The shell structure typically shows fine growth lines and a relatively open coil, with a wide umbilicus. This simplicity makes Psiloceras distinct compared to later, more ornamented ammonites. Their evolutionary significance and clear stratigraphic position make them highly sought after by both collectors and researchers.

Iridescence and Preservation Quality

One of the most remarkable features of this specimen is its natural iridescence, where the fossilised shell reflects subtle hues under light. This effect is caused by the preservation of original shell microstructures, often referred to as nacreous or mother-of-pearl-like layers, which have survived over millions of years.

The multi-slab presentation enhances the visual impact, with multiple ammonites preserved together within the matrix. This provides a dynamic and aesthetically pleasing display piece, ideal for collectors or interior décor.

Geological Context – Blue Lias Formation, Hettangian Stage

The Blue Lias Formation is a renowned sequence of alternating limestone and shale layers deposited in a shallow marine environment. During the early Jurassic, this region was covered by a warm, shallow sea rich in marine life. Fine sedimentation allowed delicate organisms like ammonites to be preserved in exceptional detail.

Psiloceras is particularly associated with the Psiloceras planorbis biozone, marking the very beginning of the Jurassic period. Fossils from this horizon are of great scientific importance as they help define a major boundary in Earth’s geological history.

Display and Collection Appeal

This carefully selected specimen offers both scientific and visual appeal. The contrast between the dark Blue Lias matrix and the lighter, iridescent ammonite shells creates an eye-catching display. The natural arrangement of multiple specimens on a single slab adds depth and character, making it a standout piece in any fossil collection.
