Description
This listing features a remarkable and iridescent fossil ammonite – Psiloceras planorbis, found in the Blue Lias Formation near Watchet, Somerset, UK. Dating back to the Early Jurassic Period, approximately 199 million years ago, this ammonite displays a captivating natural iridescence – a shimmering rainbow-like effect that makes it highly desirable for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Psiloceras planorbis is one of the earliest ammonite species of the Jurassic, serving as an important index fossil for geologists worldwide to identify the beginning of the Jurassic system. These creatures were part of an ancient lineage of marine cephalopods, distantly related to modern squid and octopuses. Their coiled external shells were divided into gas-filled chambers that aided in buoyancy control as they moved through prehistoric seas.
This specific specimen was discovered by our own team members, Alister and Alison, on 29 September 2024, along the Jurassic coast. It has been carefully cleaned, prepped, and treated by Alison to enhance its preservation and aesthetic appeal.
