Description
Fossil Type & Species:
This listing features a genuine fossil of Kepplerites gowerianus, a well-known species of Jurassic ammonite from the Lower Callovian Stage. This exceptional specimen was discovered at the Manor Farm Pit in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, and comes from the esteemed Alice Purnell Collection, offering both scientific significance and collector provenance.
Geological Formation & Insight:
Kepplerites gowerianus belongs to the family Kosmoceratidae, a group of ammonites characterized by their involute shells, sharp ribbing, and strong ornamentation. This genus played a key role in the biostratigraphy of the Middle Jurassic, with gowerianus being a notable index species for the Lower Callovian.
The specimen was recovered from the Oxford Clay Formation, one of Britain’s most fossiliferous Jurassic marine units. These deposits represent sedimentation in a shallow epicontinental sea that existed around 166 to 163 million years ago during the Middle Jurassic. The rich, fine-grained marine muds of this formation helped preserve a wide array of marine fauna, including ammonites, marine reptiles, and bivalves, in exceptional detail.
Manor Farm Pit is a classic Oxfordshire locality renowned for yielding beautifully preserved ammonites and other marine fossils. The conditions at this site often allow for the preservation of intricate shell structures, ribbing, and suture lines.
