Genuine Kodonophyllum Rugose Coral Fossil

This carefully chosen specimen is a genuine Kodonophyllum sp. rugose coral fossil preserved in longitudinal section. It originates from Council Quarry at Ledbury in Herefordshire, UK, and dates from the Lower Ludlow interval of the Silurian Period, representing an ancient marine organism that lived approximately 425 million years ago.

The longitudinal section exposes the coral along its length, revealing aspects of its internal growth structure that would normally remain hidden inside the fossil. This makes the specimen particularly interesting for collectors of fossil corals, British palaeontology, Silurian marine life and naturally sectioned geological specimens.

Lower Ludlow Silurian Geology

The Ludlow forms part of the later Silurian Period, a major interval in Earth history during which extensive shallow seas covered large areas of what is now Britain. Herefordshire lay within a marine region positioned much closer to the equator than it is today, creating warm conditions suitable for diverse coral, brachiopod, mollusc and echinoderm communities.

Sediment accumulated across the seabed as mud, carbonate material, broken shells and skeletal debris. Over immense spans of geological time, these deposits were compacted and cemented into sedimentary rock, preserving the remains of marine organisms within them.

The fossil-bearing Silurian rocks around Ledbury record changing seabed conditions, water depths and marine communities. Fossils from these deposits may include corals, brachiopods, trilobites, bryozoans, crinoids, gastropods and cephalopods. Together, they provide important evidence of life in the seas long before dinosaurs, mammals or flowering plants appeared.

When this coral died, its hard skeleton became buried within sediment. Mineral-rich groundwater later passed through the deposit, helping preserve and alter the skeletal material. Its present colour, mineralisation, matrix and visible structural details are authentic products of fossilisation and subsequent geological history.

Kodonophyllum Rugose Coral Characteristics

Kodonophyllum was a genus of rugose coral, part of an extinct group commonly known as horn corals. Rugose corals first appeared during the Ordovician and became important components of Palaeozoic marine ecosystems before disappearing during the end-Permian mass extinction.

The coral skeleton, or corallum, was secreted by a soft-bodied polyp that lived at the open end. As the animal grew, it produced additional skeletal material beneath itself, causing the corallum to lengthen progressively. This growth pattern created the elongated form characteristic of many solitary rugose corals.

Inside the corallum were vertical partitions called septa. These radiated inward from the wall and helped support the living polyp. Horizontal internal structures could also develop as the coral grew, dividing older portions of the skeleton from the area occupied by the living animal.

The term “rugose” refers to the wrinkled or ridged outer appearance commonly seen on these corals. Growth lines may mark successive stages in the coral’s development, while changes in curvature or diameter can reflect variations in growth conditions on the ancient seabed.

Longitudinal Section Display

This specimen is presented in longitudinal section, meaning it has been divided along the direction of the coral’s growth rather than cut across its width. This orientation reveals the internal structure from the lower part of the corallum towards the former calice where the living polyp was situated.

Visible features may include the elongated outline, internal partitions, growth changes, mineral-filled cavities and the boundary between the coral skeleton and surrounding rock. The exact appearance depends on the original preservation and the angle through which the specimen has been sectioned.

A longitudinally exposed coral is particularly useful for educational study because it demonstrates how the animal added new skeletal material throughout its life. It also creates an attractive natural pattern formed by biological growth and later mineralisation.

Natural irregularities, small fractures, incomplete areas, differences in polish or sectioning and patches of surrounding matrix are part of the specimen’s individual character. These features record both the life of the coral and the geological processes that acted upon it after burial.

Ancient Silurian Marine Ecosystem

Rugose corals were sessile animals, meaning they remained fixed or rested in one position rather than actively swimming. The living polyp possessed tentacles used to capture suspended food particles and small organisms from the surrounding seawater.

Some rugose corals lived as solitary individuals, while others formed colonies of numerous closely associated corallites. Their distribution depended on factors such as water depth, sediment movement, seabed stability, oxygen levels and the availability of suitable surfaces.

During the Lower Ludlow, coral-bearing communities occupied marine environments alongside brachiopods, bryozoans, crinoids and other invertebrates. These organisms formed complex ecosystems within the Silurian seas and contributed skeletal material to the accumulating sediment after death.

Unlike modern reef-building corals, rugose corals belonged to an entirely extinct evolutionary group. Their distinctive internal construction and long fossil record make them important for studying Palaeozoic marine environments and coral evolution.
