Large Pleurotomaria Fossil Gastropod Jurassic UK | Genuine Shell Specimen with COA

£36.00

This large and visually striking fossil gastropod belongs to the genus Pleurotomaria, an extinct group of marine snails from the Jurassic period. This specimen was discovered in the UK and dates to approximately 174–145 million years ago, offering a remarkable window into ancient marine ecosystems that once covered much of Europe.

Pleurotomaria species are notable for their distinctive high-spired, trochiform shell with a unique slit or selenizone running along the whorls—a characteristic adaptation that helped the living animal manage water flow and respiration. This specimen beautifully preserves those hallmark features with clear coiling, growth lines, and sutures.

Jurassic Information

The Jurassic Period (201–145 million years ago) was the golden age of dinosaurs, with iconic species like Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Allosaurus dominating the land. It was a time of warm, humid climates, with high sea levels that created vast shallow seas, supporting abundant marine reptiles, ammonites, and early coral reefs. The first birds, such as Archaeopteryx, evolved from small theropod dinosaurs, while early mammals remained small and nocturnal. Lush forests of cycads, conifers, and ferns covered the land, providing food for giant herbivores. The breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea accelerated, shaping Earth's geography and setting the stage for the diverse ecosystems of the Cretaceous.
