Description
This genuine ammonite fossil is a beautifully preserved specimen of Leptosphinctes festensis, discovered in the Inferior Oolite Formation at Louse Hill, near Beaminster, Dorset, UK. Dating back to the Bajocian stage of the Middle Jurassic (approx. 170 million years ago), this fossil comes from the Concavum Zone, a notable biostratigraphic interval for the identification and correlation of Jurassic marine sequences.
Leptosphinctes ammonites are known for their evolute shells with strong ribbing and relatively compressed whorls, features well-represented in this specimen. The species festensis was formally described in 1902 by Wetzel, and it serves as a useful marker fossil within the Bajocian.
